The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by inn2thestorm] I have always wondered how you got into acting and how you got cast into the Brady Bunch? Did you find it fun having a big tv family?

A: I studied, I got an agent, I went on auditions and I went to work. I very much enjoyed having a big TV family. The experiences we went through were shared. Ours was a very professional childhood. We filmed the series, we made cartoons, we made records, personal appearances and tours. It was nice being able to share those things with other kids who really understood what it was all about and it helped us keep our heads on straight.

Q: [by DvHof] Hi Barry, besides "Growing Up Brady", do you have any other favorite books about classic TV shows? I've written a couple of them, but since I want your unbiased response I won't mention which ones!

A: I wish I could mention a couple off the top of my head but I have been in a different reading direction of late. As a kid I didn’t always devote the time to the "classics" and I have been trying to catch up. The last few books I have read are The Great Gatsby, Go Tell It On the Mountain, To Kill A Mockingbird, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Q: [by pk2kid] Are you a Christian and if so what religion are you?

A: Yes, I am a Christian and was raised a Presbyterian. I attend the Presbyterian Church here in New York City.

Q: [by Trip7slady] Hey Barry, Looking back is there a storyline that was not pursued that you wish would have been?

A: Storylines: Greg goes to college, Greg actually becomes Johnny Bravo and ditches his brothers and sisters, Greg goes to jail, Greg becomes a man.... I must have been thinking about a different show.

Q: [by Purpleladydi99] Hi Barry, This is probably the strangest question you ever got. In the boys room in the BBUNCH, there are two pictures over Peter's bed. I've been noticing red outlines inside the picture frames, around the photo. Is this something for cameras, or filming?? Or am I just crazy for seeing this??? Diane-

A: I love this question Purplelady. I have no idea what you are referring to but I agree it is a strange question.

Q: [by barrett] Barry, alot of people really wonder if you have ever returned to Kings Island or not. I was curious if you have done any work or appeared in the Cincinnati area and stopped by the park? If you haven't, the place has sure grown up, but alot of the same things are still there. Including the football throw game that you filmed a scene at. Also, why did they take you all the way to Cincy to film at KI, when there are theme parks alot closer to Los Angeles? Hope to hear from you.

A: The reason we filmed at Kings Island was a deal ABC and Paramount had with one another. I understand that ABC originally had a financial stake in the park and taking our show there was like one big long commercial for them. I know it has changed a great deal since we were there but I have not had the pleasure of returning. I am a huge amusement park fan so I hope to go there on a return visit to Cincinnati.

Q: [by fscott] Barry – We all grew up with The Brady Bunch and many other TV shows providing us with "Alternate" realities, that we can access, look back on fondly, sometimes obsess over, but they are a part of who we are. Since you were IN the TV business, I was wondering if there were any shows YOU watched, that became part of YOUR life, or did you completely miss out on that part of growing up?

A: One of the reasons I wanted to work in television is because I watched it all the time. I remember Sky King and his twin engine plane always coming to save the day. Bozo the Clown was the first celebrity I ever met, Lassie was a favorite(we even called our German Shepard "Tassie" after her), Whirlybirds was another(it was about helicopters) and Fury with the horse and the ranch inspired me to go into show business and also to buy a horse as a kid.

Q: [by slickchick602] Hi, Barry. I just heard you on the radio(The New Zone 101.5 in Phoenix), and I thought your Eminem parody "The Real Greg Brady" was hilarious. I was wondering if you are going to do a video for it. I'd vote for it on MTV's video countdown, Total Request Live. Thanks. ~Lisa~

A: I would love to do a video for the song. It seems like a natural and if we get the support on the record we’re goin’ in for the visual on video. Thanks for writing and... keep on groovin’

Q: [by FullerBrushGirl] Hi Barry! Here's my question…since Desi Arnaz Jr. appeared on a "Brady Bunch" episode, did that give you an opportunity to meet Lucille Ball or Desi Arnaz Sr.? Were they on the set at all during the filming of that episode? If so, how was that experience?

A: One of my great regrets is that I did not have a chance to meet Lucille Ball or Desi Sr. while we shared the Paramount lot. I have seen Desi Jr. several times since(and played tennis with him). Desi Jr. came to the set for our Brady episode by himself and was very amiable.

Q: [by werky2] Just curious as to why you chose the remakes that you did for the album? I found it interesting that you chose to use 2 Queen songs. Being a huge Queen fan, I was delighted to hear your version of the songs, especially These Are the Days…

A: I was given free reign on song selection and I chose songs that have a personal connection to me, that I liked and thought others would enjoy hearing me sing. It was a coincidence that two Queen songs made the cut and I like them both. These Are the Days is my favorite song on the Return of Johnny Bravo CD.
