The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by SicWhiteRob] Dear Barry, Did you have any creative control in regards to the premise of the stories? If so, please cite specific details. Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you. -Sic White Rob

A: The story lines were developed by the writers and rarely consulted with the cast for ideas. Most of the plots were of typical issues that kids and families are confronted with. We did have input regarding some of the dialogue.

Q: [by Marchden] I saw you backstage at the Sammy Hagar/David Lee Roth show in LA. Who did you think was better?

A: First the Sammy/David concert was awesome. It’s tough to pick a favorite because they are both so good and very different. For me, David Lee Roth epitomizes the rock attitude of strut and grandiose making him a more enjoyable performer. On the other hand Sammy is a much better musician. Great show all the way around.

Q: [by SClub7JoyBoy] Hi! My name is Lee & I am from England and my friend is Kat & she is from Germany. My friend won a competition to see S Club 7 in L.A. and we were lucky enough to meet Barry on the set as he was filming with them at the time. He was awesome, he told us some cool stories & we have some cool pics from him also. We were wondering if he will be staring in the new S Club series "Viva S Club" which is currently being filmed in Spain, and if he will also star in their Movie later this year or not? I hope he remembers us. I will email the pictures in a separate email. Many Thanks, hope you can reply to us also. Kat & Lee

A: First hi, yes I do remember meeting you on the set. I am not a part of the Spain S Club cause I have been on tour here in the states this summer. A motion picture is being developed and I am talking with them about playing Dean "the machine" Strickland as their manager. Thanks for writing and take good care.

Q: [by angusoy] Hello Barry, I have been a fan of you and the cast of the Brady Bunch as long as I can remember. I'm 30, and by the time I was able to remember what I watched on tv, the Bradys were alreay in rerun land. I have a 4 year old daughter, and she loves the show. What do you contribute the success for all these generations, and do you expect it to continue? Will I be talking about Brady reruns with my grandchildren?

A: Thank you for your kind thoughts regarding our show. There may be as many reasons for the enduring affection for the Brady’s as there are people, but some of them may include: the idealism, communication, innocence, family values, and the super groovy fashion statements.

Q: [by nbulger] Does barry lift and how much can Barry lift?

A: Are you a weightlifter? I generally go for reps rather than maximum weight because it is safer. On the bench press I work with between 125 and 150 pounds. At one time I could lift 200 pounds.

Q: [by 00kidd] Barry, Who is in your band and how did you find them? I need a new gig. You are great on O & A. Thanks

A: Since Memorial Day of this year I have been touring with Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees. Their band, headed by Jerry Renino, also backed me. A great group of guys and a young lady all extremely talented. I had a rhythm section and 3 horns, eight of us altogether plus me on guitar.

Q: [by calabresenan] Barry, What is Al and Elroy Schwartz doing these days, they did some writing for your show. Also when you were doing the Brady Bunch what was the occupations of all six kids parents and were they very supportive of all of you.

A: One of the major reasons we Brady Kids kept our balance and perspectives is due to the solid support we had from our parents and families. Our respective parents had a wide array of careers. Mike’s dad was a high school principal, Eve’s dad was a record producer, my father is a business man owning a chain of credit bureaus, Maureen’s dad was a teacher. Also there were no divorces among the Brady Kids during the time we were filming which helped keep a balance as well. Regarding Elroy and Al Schwartz, I am not currently in touch with them. As you may know they are related to Sherwood and would be in the best position to inform you what they are up to.

Q: [by chinadoll23us] Hi Barry! Hope you are doing good! If you ever did a radio show who would you want your sidekicks to be? Howard Stern has Robin and the gang, who would you choose to be alongside you?

A: I don’t know the person but I would want someone who loves to read and keeps up with current events, someone who enjoys show business and knows gossip, and someone with a sharp sense of humor. Got any ideas?

Q: [by rodmn] Barry, Are you aware that Peter Gabriel has written a new song with the title of "The Barry Williams Show" it is really a cool song, but does this song have anything to do with you, did you approve this with Peter Gabriel?

A: I have seen the lyrics but I have not yet heard the song. In what may be a stunning coincidence I am told by his publicist that he picked the name out of a hat and it doesn’t relate to me personally or professionally at all. The song is about a fictional talk show and a pretty strong indictment of the "Jerry Springer" mentality. Peter is English and he may have missed reading the credits for the Brady Bunch. One thing is certain; the song will be interpreted differently here in the states because of the name association.

Q: [by rbs45306] Hi Barry, On the Brady Bunch my favorite episodes are the ones based in Hawaii. You had a great surfing wipe-out — did you really scare everyone and do you still surf now?

A: Although a wipeout was planned for the script, the one I took was not scripted and yes people were very concerned about my well being(especially me). If you look carefully I actually fell on a sharp coral rock just in front of me. Fortunately it was harder on my feet than my head and I was, relatively, okay. It did end my surfing for that trip however.
