The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by rockstock2001us] Barry – I saw you backstage at the David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar show here in LA. I heard "There's Greg Brady!" more times than, "There's David Lee Roth!". Made me think, while best known for this role, how difficult is it to break the type cast commonly associated with successes such as yours, and have the industry not view you as "Greg Brady" but as an artist. And how did you transition into theater from television?

A: I can’t control what people say or how they associate me. I simply keep doing the best work I can in all fields, music theatre, TV, movies etc. and focus on the current project. As far as the Brady Bunch, I am proud of the show, my participation in it and am probably luckier than most who spend a lifetime in show business and never get known for anything.

Q: [by andrew] Barry, any thoughts on the "The Brady Hour" being named one of the worst tv shows ever by T.V. Guide? By the way…I want to thank you for making a show that I can watch with my kids!

A: John Waters described "camp" as something so bad it’s good. The Brady Bunch Hour kind’ve comes under that definition. I don’t know why some people get so bent about our little show. We had great guests, entertaining skits and fantastically tight form--fitting jumpsuits to wear.

Q: [by starbaby931] Hi Barry. In 'Growing up Brady', there is a song played on record where your character and Marsha are in the bedroom. I love the song but do not know what it is?

A: I believe the name of the song you are thinking of is Crystal Blue Persuasion.

Q: [by buttonose98] I heard that you are doing a movie with David Spade. What is the title, and when can we expect to see it out?

A: It’s called "Dickie Roberts - Former Child Star" and it is still in principle production. The earliest it would be out is Spring and that will depend on a number of factors Paramount will have to consider to create the best timing for release.

Q: [by sternlou] Barry: In the Johnny Bravo episode, one of the guest stars was the beautiful Claudia Jennings. She was one of the prettiest ladies I have ever seen on television. I know that she died in a tragic auto accident in 1979. what was it like working with her?

A: In a word... exciting. She was all ready quite well known at the time and had done a couple of Playboy layouts. I have always felt that Greg should have done the Johnny Bravo thing just to keep her around.

Q: [by tunesfreak] Barry- While it is not biographical, I was curious what you thought of the new Peter Gabriel song, "The Barry Williams Show"? It is true that you will/have made a cameo in the music video for the tune?

A: Yes, but beware it is an extremely brief cameo appearance. Apparently Mr. Sean Penn(the director) felt that too long of an angle featuring me interrupted the flow of the video. I have seen it twice and still don’t know where my part is. That said, it is an extremely well done video, very powerful and I think the song is powerful too.

Q: [by alexandrahyland] Hi Barry, I was just wondering what stunts did u have to perform on the Fear Factor episode that you were in?

A: Without giving too much away, the stunts involved potentially getting run over by a monster truck, swimming with over a thousand snakes, and dangling about 400 feet in the air in a small Plexiglas box with a trap door for a floor. Stay tuned it airs September 23rd.

Q: [by MSC2001VW] Barry, I always wondered being a child actor like you were, how did you, as well as other child actors, work a full-time acting job AND go to school at the same time? Did you have to attend acting school before you got picked to be on the Brady Bunch? how did you ever land the role of greg in the first place? also, in the episode when peter broke the vase, did they use any "special effects" to make the ball bounce right onto the vase? or did they have to practice and practice until they got it right?

A: There are very specific and strict laws regarding the workplace and school. A minimum of three hours per day is required and private accredited tutors are employed by the studios to teach the courses and monitor the welfare of minors. When not actually working during a school year, most actors return to their usual schools and attend regular classes. Several auditions led me to the role of Greg on the Brady Bunch, also I had done several other television shows at Paramount where we filmed so they knew me. On the vase: the prop guys stood above it and bounced the ball down while the cameras rolled. It took three times to get it right.

Q: [by webmaster] I heard you on the Howard Stern show this morning, What was it like working with Howard and his crew. It sounded like alot of fun and you seam to be very busy. Keep up the good work.

A: I always enjoy going into the studio with Howard and his group. He is always a lot nicer in person. There is a ton of activity there and it feels a little like being on a roller coaster.

Q: [by spalmer] Hi Barry, What other shows were you on in the 70's. I remember seeing you on Dragnet. Were there any other shows that you guest starred on? What, if any, stars are you friends with besides the Brady kids? Thanks! I think it's cool that you carry on so positively w/ the "Brady Bunch" in your professional career and in your life.

A: I was very active before The Brady Bunch. I addition to the Dragnet episode you saw I also guest starred in episodes of Run For Your Life, The FBI, The Mod Squad, The Invaders, Marcus Welby M.D., It Takes A Thief, Mission Impossible, Gomer Pyle, That Girl and others. In my book Growing Up Brady(available on this website) I detail all of those shows as well as the Brady years. Thanks for asking. Take good care.
