The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by leanne_good] Happy New Year Barry! I was wondering what plans you have for 2003 and what projects you will be working on? Are you still appearing in S Club 7 shows? Love Leanne

A: See question number two. Regarding S Club, the year of shows I did continues to air but I have not made any new ones this year.

Q: [by altraviolettte] Dear Barry, I am reading your book right now, which I love, since I have always loved you and still do:), but anyway, I always wondered when you did the hair-tonic show if your hair was really dyed red or did you have a wig on? Thanks alot and Congrats on the baby-Altra~

A: Hi Altra. I have always thought it look fairly obvious that I was wearing a wig. With filming schedules the way they are it would have been too time consuming to change my real hair color to orange and then back to its natural color. Anyway it makes me feel good to know you weren’t sure.

Q: [by browneyez087x] Hey Barry, do you still get a lot of fanmail now? Like how much?

A: I have been fortunate to have fans of the show and of my work for a lifetime. Yes, I get fan mail and the amount varies. If I have a hot new project like when my season of S Club 7 came on the air it jumps up to a few hundred a week. If not it slows down a bit. I am just grateful that people care... like you.

Q: [by renobound] Barry, After reading your book, "Growing Up Brady, I Was a Teenage Greg", I have noticed the things you mention about specific episodes. I am curious about a couple of episodes though. The Hawaii trilogy just aired on TVLand. Were the scenes filmed inside the hotel & the cave filmed at Paramount or were they filmed in Hawaii? Also, in the first episode that Sherwood Schwartz's daughter Hope is in, "The Big Bet", in the credits at the end of the episode it shows her name as Hope Sherwood, not Schwartz. Was this done intentionally?

A: The answer to your first question is both. Much of the episodes were shot in Hawaii on Oahu where we stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Some parts were filmed at Paramount and the cave portions of the final episode with Vincent Price were filmed at Columbia Studios on the original set of Gilligan’s Island. Hope uses the stage name "Sherwood" after her father and yes it was intentional.

Q: [by marksvilleboy] Hey Barry, what can I say, you are one cool guy!! I mean, you are the real Greg Brady, what can I say? I have always been a huge BB fan, and it's awesome because my dad grew up watching the show, and my generation enjoyed the classic reruns, but the BB is a classic, and that's why it's so well received by the audiences. My question to you is this, do you feel that being "Greg Brady" in any way hindered your growth as an entertainer, in the way that you never could get past people labeling you from your most dominantly known character? And how do you pull Barry out of Greg Brady's Image? I'm a huge fan of yours and would love to meet you if you are ever in Louisiana!! Thank you buddy!! Sincerely, Willis Armand

A: Sure being "Greg Brady" changed the course of my career as any series has had that much impact would. I wouldn’t say it has hindered it though. I am very fortunate to be a part of a beloved series and fortunately for me I am doing all of the things I wanted to do in my career even before there was a Brady Bunch. Just in the past two years I have been a regular on the series S Club 7, starred in the Broadway National Tour of The Sound of Music, Toured with the Monkees, Filmed a movie at Paramount with David Spade, been in Peter Gabriel’s video, done Fear Factor, Celebrity Boot Camp and lots more. I am a happy camper.

Q: [by Bowafan1] Hello Barry, I'm a 14 year old girl and your biggest fan here at MHS! I'm proud to say that my friend and I can rap the whole 'The Real Greg Brady' without missing a word! I can also play it on the drumset. I was wondering if you were at all familiar with Avril Lavigne(sorry, I can't spell) and her songs at all. She's the Canadian punk/pop vegetarian skater chick. She's one of my favorites. What do you think? -Lizzie

A: I think she is great. A couple of months ago I performed on the Billboard Music Awards and Avril was another one of the performers. I got to watch her through rehearsals and her performance which I thought was terrific. She will be around for a long time.

Q: [by plusone_girl2000] Hi Barry, In the episode of the Brady Bunch where Robert Reed thinks the mascot(goat) you hid upstairs was actually a girl rather than an animal, was this considered pushing the limits on your show for that era of time? To suggest that a boy on the Brady Bunch would have a girl in his room all night long would be thought of as too suggestive, wouldn't it?. Was their any doubt amongst the producers or anyone that this was pushing it a little too far? Any recollections on that episode?

A: No one considered it "pushing the envelope." By then Greg was a healthy, teenager and sometimes referred to as the Casanova of Clinton Avenue. I just wish it had been a real Raquel(named after Raquel Welch by the way) instead of a smelly old goat.

Q: [by helen.wittmack] Dear Barry Are you married and have children? If so have they seen the Brady Bunch and what do they think of dad in the show? Also I have just seen Growing up a Brady on cable and loved the show. Keep up the good work. Helen

A: Well Helen, it’s funny you should ask. Yes I am married for four years and my wife and I just had our first baby boy, Brandon, thirty days ago. We are all doing fine except we haven’t slept through a night for a month.

Q: [by Khen819685] Barry I was wondering if you had any brothers or sisters? I have noticed that there is not much information about your personal lives away from the brady bunch. Like did you come from a show business family or one that did not have anything to do with show business?

A: I have two older brothers and I am the only one of my family in show business. I began my career at 11 years old because I wanted to be on TV and lived in Los Angeles making that much more possible. In Growing Up Brady I go into much more detail about life off the set. Thanks for asking.

Q: [by danielverdi] Hello Barry. As a hobby, I collect replica movie and television props. I very much would like to acquire the Hawaiian "Tiki Idol" you wore around your neck during the television show(not the original, but a replica), as your sitcom was part of my childhood. What can you tell me about the piece? Do you know where the original is and do they still sell them? How could I go about getting one? Thanks Barry!

A: I can tell you that I have it but they are not available for general sale. It is one of the few things I have been fortunate to retain as a memento. I use it in the upcoming movie with David Spade ":Dickie Roberts Former Child Star" during a poker match. Maybe it would be a good thing to duplicate and sell as replicas.
