The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by randy] Hi Barry, my question is… Out of all the special guests that appeared on the Brady Bunch ex: Joe Namath, Hank Aaron, Davy Jones,Astronaut James McDivitt, Don Ho, etc… Who was your favorite to work with?

A: This is like trying to figure out which of your children you like best. I just ran into Joe Namath at ABC’s 50th Television Anniversary Special. He was a gracious now as he was then. Two weeks ago, while filming in Hawaii for the Travel channel, I was invited to and sang with Don Ho, how cool is that? Davy Jones and I spent most of last summer touring around the US performing in clubs, casinos, and State Fairs. I think it is totally cool that I could meet all of our guest stars and years later pick up where we left off.

Q: [by chikarl] Hi Barry, In the early seventies you were working on a solo album for Paramount. What happened to that material and why did that album never come out? You also did some songs with Mike Post in 1978 and they never made it to vinyl. Do you think there will ever be a CD that will gather up the lost early songs? I know that Cheyenne made it on the best of the Brady Bunch but I believe that is all that was ever released.

A: My solo efforts were put on the shelf to concentrate on somebody’s idea to do a Brady album. The album was not finished. The songs with Mike Post got sidelined when the President of Private Stock Records(my company) passed away. You can see why so much in show business has to do with timing.

Q: [by PTomarken] If you were to host a quiz show what will it be?

A: Jeopardy. It would be neat to know the questions before the answers were given?

Q: [by Trainsite] Hi Barry – Technical question… With all of the various incarnations of the Brady Bunch, where they had to rebuild the entire set to look close enough to how it was in the original series, was there ever an incarnation or variation on this set where you walked on stage and said, "No, this isn't right" or "Those details aren't right", etc. What set building errors did you find, and on what post-original Brady Bunch(movie/series) was it built for?

A: Each time the set was rebuilt at Paramount Studios for a reunion, the original set of drawings were used to create it. Rarely was there a problem and of course with the series still on the air there is a lot of resource material to pull from.

Q: [by Vance714] Happy Summer Mr. Williams! I know that you're a fan of Uncle Kracker's and I wanted to know what you thought of his rendition of "Drift Away"? thanks so much for taking the time out of your hectic schedule. :) love, Aimee

A: I am a fan of Uncle Kracker’s, but I still hear Dobie Gray when I "Drift Away."

Q: [by Anonymous] If you had a different profession other than performer, what profession do you think you would have gone into?

A: I have given this some thought. Knowing what I know now, if I were not a performer I think I would be happy in Entertainment Law.

Q: [by eightiesqueen1] Hello Mr. Williams, I'm 28, a part time freelance writer and a full time mother. I also have MS. 1) What type of charity work have you been involved in?

A: I have supported several charities over the years. Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Leukemia, Adam Walsh Foundation, Alzheimer’s, AIDS, and Lupus. I try to contribute as much as I can both with time and dollars. Thank you for writing and I wish you the very best in dealing with your condition.

Q: [by christop1] hi Barry. I am a big fan of yours! Did you have a hard time growing up on TV? Do you think child stars are often doomed to lives of crime or drugs(like Danny Bonaduce, Dana Plato, Shermy Sheldon)?

A: I loved growing up with the Brady’s and on TV. I talk allot about the experience in my book, Growing Up Brady, but basically I think it is a wonderful profession but it helps a lot if you have a good solid family going into it. My family certainly helped me survive the demands and stress. By the way Danny Bonaduce is a very successful radio and TV personality these days.

Q: [by cmedytrgdy] I just read this old Post. "First I like Eminem's Slim Shady. The Greg Brady/Slim Shady rhyme is fairly obvious. My challenge was to distill the questions and areas of curiosity regarding me and the Brady show into 2 1/2 minutes using as many references as possible. I am delighted you like the song and I hope it brings a smile." How long did it tak you to write that song exactly?

A: There is no "exactly". It developed over time and I had two other writers that contributed. From concept to recording it was about six months.

Q: [by timleanne] Hi Barry! Congratulations on becoming a father earlier this year! How has your life changed since Brandon was born(less sleep?)?

A: The one thing that holds true regarding a first born is that there is no way to prepare for him. Brandon has turned life upside down and right side up for us. We are totally thrilled to have a healthy happy baby even now five months later we are besides ourselves. He has been traveling with us, three times to New York, to London and we just returned from Geneva, Switzerland. He seems to enjoy his adventures and each trip is loaded with firsts. Last week his first boat ride, carousel ride, swing, and taste of sorbet. We are just now settling into a sleep routine, sometimes we get four hours at a time. He has given our lives a grounding and new purpose. We have been blessed.
