The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by daviddb] Although The Brady Bunch theme song told us that "this lady met this fellow", I don't think we were told HOW they met. Did you ever hear how the producers or writers would have had Mike and Carol meet? Also, I've read that another set of Brady kids was chosen with blonde-haired boys (in case the father was blonde-haired) and dark-haired girls (in case the mother was dark-haired). Did any of those "other" Brady kids go on to become "name" actors?

A: These are both good questions, unfortunately I don’t have the answers. My opinion is Sherwood Schwartz, the show’s creator, never gave how Mike and Carol met a thought (PTA meeting). I don’t know. There were indeed two sets of kids chosen but I have no idea who those other kids are. Maybe somebody out there can help us answer this one. Take care.

Q: [by staggs_christopher] Barry, What did u think of Maureen McCormick's album "When You Get A Little Lonely"? I bought it and thought it was fantastic as well as your albums which i also have…I am a HUGE BRADY FAN and I think that it was and IS still the best show on television!!!!!

A: I think it’s great and not just because she’s my TV sister. I wish she would record more, she has a nice sound and it is a little bit country.

Q: [by antard] I just saw the airborne commercial I would like to know who are the other actors that appear in that commercial.

A: There are several. Among them: Butch Patrick(Munsters), Charlene Tilton(Dallas), and Johnny Whitaker(Family Affair).

Q: [by robertinflight] Hello Barry, My question to you is what was the funniest thing that happened to the cast behind the scenes.

A: I’ll tell you the scariest. We were filming at King’s Island. The camera was mounted on the front car facing the rear where we were to be sitting. Robert Reed insisted the coaster go around without the cast for a test run. On the last part of the ride the camera got knocked off by a low overhang which potentially would have been a very dangerous ride. P.S. The camera was remounted much lower and we were successful in getting our shots.

Q: [by oldlouisvilleguy] I am from Ohio and always enjoyed the Kings Island episode because it was so close to my home. Did you like the rides? I have heard stories that it was not a good experience for the cast. Did Ann B. Davis enjoy the rides? Thanks for letting me ask the question.

A: Much has changed at King’s Island since the Brady’s filmed there in the early seventies. At that time the park was new, and unfinished. The Brady’s were unable to go anywhere without creating a mob scene and we stayed at the one nearby lodge where park guests routinely looked in the girls bedroom and bathroom windows. Just over a year ago I revisited the "Island" while touring with the Monkees. I had a blast and went on all of their new thrill rides. It’s a great place for fun.

Q: [by k9casanova] Just wondering – are you a fan of Tom Jones? I hear some of him in your work.

A: Thank you. I am a huge fan of Tom’s although I don’t consciously imitate him. I think his is one of the best pop voices around and has been for some time. I have seen him perform many times and had the pleasure of meeting him too. He has a great personality to go with his great voice.

Q: [by ecmick] Has your Spaniel adjusted to having Brandon around? I know that sometimes dogs can be jealous of children.

A: I have heard that too. This was not the case with our dog. Buffy only lived for five months after Brandon was born before passing away at the age of 15 1/2 years old. During that time she was very loving toward him and noncompetitive. But then Buffy loved everybody. We miss her.

Q: [by themin1] I just caught your new AIRBONE commercial. It is sooo campy and funny. It's that you screaming, NOOOOOOOO!. Kuddos for having a great sense of humor. BTW the product looks interesting.

A: Yes that is me screaming and that’s the way I feel when people around me start coughing or sneezing and not covering their mouths. Airborne is a terrific product, I use it frequently especially when traveling. The company has a good sense of humor and I am pleased to be associated with them. Also I was hoarse for three days following the shooting of those commercials.

Q: [by southport860] Hi Barry, I was just wondering if the California fire has affected you at all or any of the other cast from the Brady Bunch? Hope all is well for your families and this fire will stop soon.

A: Everyone in Southern California was affected, but fortunately none of my friends or Brady’s lost their homes. The smoke was powerful and I read it reached all the way to Chicago, IL.

Q: [by mbenty] Barry, based upon the phenomenal syndicated success of the Brady Bunch, do you think a contemporary show with the essential core premise(s)(i.e. wholesome family values/issues/comedy/etc.) would be a TV success today? I recently viewed most of the Brady episodes with my children and they absolutely loved the show! Further, do you know of any current shows that would favorably compare to the Brady Bunch? Michael

A: Certainly there is room on prime time for a show that represents the core values of the Brady Bunch. Like all things it would have to be contemporary and updated but I believe that the reason our show thrives today is because those morality tales are timeless. I don’t know of a show currently running that fits the bill.
