The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by vmnrao4] Hi Barry – just saw your "Living in TV Land" show and it was a great blend of scripted humor and real life situations. My question has to do with a song you did with the Brady Kids way back when called "Candy (Sugar Shoppe)". The lyrics for this song have always seemed a little inappropriate for kids to be singing. Did you guys have any idea what the song lyrics implied when you did it? Any idea why they would have you perform such a song? Always wondered about this song, as it doesn't really fit with the rest of the tunes.

A: Until you mentioned it I didn’t even know the song had an alternative meaning. It was selected like all of the others, what was popular at the time. I don’t think it was used as a double entendre.

Q: [by chavalabobby] What was it like working with Adam Sandler and David Spade?

A: David is a great guy. He is very natural in front of the camera, very professional and generous as an actor. It would be more appropriate to say I have worked for Adam Sandler than with him. His company was one of the producers of Dickie Roberts.

Q: [by erich] What is your ancestry? (Irish? Jewish? Italian?)

A: I am Scotch/English/Irish.

Q: [by prhirang37] I loved those Grand Canyon episodes and I was wondering what part of the Grand Canyon National Park was the show filmed? The South Rim? Or the North Rim? Family and I are planning to go there in July.

A: To the best of my recollection we were at the South Rim. But the view is gorgeous from everywhere. Have fun on your trip,.

Q: [by mysteryman343] I NOTICED ON ANOTHER QUESTION THAT YOU SAID YOU REALLY WERE SMOKING IN THE EPISODE WHERE YOU GOT CAUGHT. WERE YOU A REGULAR SMOKER AND IF SO DO YOU STILL SMOKE

A: I smoked cigarettes as a teenager. One of the few things I really regret. I no longer use tobacco of any kind.

Q: [by fonziejj99] Hello Barry, My name name is James I just saw your "Living in TV Land" and you were fantastic. It's so refreshing to see someone who is such a part of pop culture not forget what role in there career made them. The way you treat your fans is real and from the hart. I know it must get old having people call you Greg but you must know they mean no ill towards you. I have been a fan of yours and the BB show all my life. To an actor such as myself who is just starting to book some rolls you are an inspiration on how to conduct yourself on and off camera. My question to you is what was really going through your head as you threw out the first pitch. P.S. Cant wait to see you on that 70's Show.

A: My last thought was, “please don’t let this ball end up in the dirt”. My second to the last thought was, “this one’s for you Don Drysdale”.

Q: [by sjdusk] Did you have any say on how they decorated your attic room on THE BRADY BUNCH or did the producers dress up the room themselves (I'm most curious about who thought up the idea of the "bead curtain", it rocked!)?

A: Yes, I did have input on the room decoration. It was my idea for the lava lamp the beaded curtain and posters. We had an excellent team of set decorators and I was pleased they allowed me to contribute ideas to their vision.

Q: [by MIKEYCHEST] HI BARRY…WAS WONDERING WHERE YOU GOT THAT GREAT SHIRT ON THE 70'S MUSIC EXPLOSION INFOMERCIAL. THANKS…MIKEYCHEST

A: Interestingly, it is not a vintage shirt. The wardrobe dept. gave me a choice of several different shirts. I felt the one you see on the infomercial was most appropriate. It is made by Dolce Gabana.

Q: [by chavalabobby] Did you ever met Elvis Presley?

A: No, but I came close. He taped his comeback TV Special at Paramount Studios during the time we were filming the Brady Bunch. Unfortunately our production schedules conflicted and I was unable to be a visitor. I am however a big fan (like everyone else) and grateful for all that he contributed musically.

Q: [by cogitolateral] Hi Barry, I remember reading in your book that in the episode "54-40 and Fight" you rightfully questioned the parent's judgement in how things were to be resolved. But, I was wondering if since becoming a Dad, you've ever applied any parenting skills that we used in the show; and if so, were they effective?

A: Oh sure, I simply parent by episode! Brandon is three, so many of the issues that we dealt with on the Brady Bunch have not come up yet. However the values from the show still apply today, and I am sure they will come up at appropriate times.
