The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by albanysangel] Dear Barry, how long did it take you and the rest of the "Brady Kids" to learn the songs you were going to sing on your albums? Were you already familiar with most of the songs? If the song was original to the show like Time To Change or Gonna Find A Rainbow did you have a recording of the music with someone else singing it to listen to or what? How long did the albums take to record?

A: We learned the songs first by listening to demo tapes and then sitting around a piano. I was familiar with all the cover songs we recorded and we recorded our vocal tracks usually two or three songs per day.

Q: [by Stacey] Hey Barry!!! After you were stoned on the "Law and Disorder" episode, did you ever use weed again? Thanks!!!!!!

A: I went through a stage of experimentation as a kid. I certainly never went to the set high again but I don’t like weed. It makes me feel dumb, paranoid and hungry. I have better things to do.

Q: [by s_scobell] I have been jamming out to your new CD since I picked it up in November! It seems like you enjoy a variety of musical styles. What artists have been most influential in your music career?

A: Elton, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Richard Marx, and of course Dr. Dre.

Q: [by Kittykaat9] Hey Barry! Let me start off by saying I totally admire all your work and am a HUGE fan. For my question, I was wondering, have all the cast members of the "Brady Bunch" smoked(cigarettes)in the past at one time or do now? Thanks!

A: Interesting question. With the exception of Michael Lookinland all the Brady Kids have been cigarette smokers. I know that Susan recently successfully stopped. I have stopped and I think Chris is the only one who still dabbles with it. Must have been when we grew up. What a stupid habit.

Q: [by LJAgase] Hi Barry! Does it seem like only yesterday you were on the Brady Bunch? I am the same age as you and I can't believe I sit and watch the same shows with my daughters! Was it a fun time in your life to look back on? It was for me. Take care, and you haven't changed a bit!

A: The Brady’s are an ongoing part of my life. Reunions, and appearances, and talk shows keep us in touch with each other. Also I am asked about the show often so it doesn’t seem so long ago.

Q: [by leanne_good] What do/did your brothers think of The Brady Bunch? Are you very close to them now?

A: Yes I am close to my brothers. I think they enjoy the show through their kids now. My eldest brother, Craig, has a son and daughter and our middle brother Scott, has a son who have all enjoyed the show.

Q: [by JBaum9000] Mr. Williams: Thanks for the reply to my earlier question. What was the reason for the addition of the "Cousin Oliver" character to the Brady Bunch? I believe this was done in 1974. Was this intended to be a ratings booster by the producers of the series?

A: Cousin Oliver was added to our show by the network as a way to keep the story lines young. They always felt the Brady’s was more of a kids show and didn’t want the cast to grow up. Needless to say it didn’t work.

Q: [by cmm] Who else auditioned for the role of Nora before Caryn Richman got the part?

A: I was not involved with the casting of Mrs. Greg Brady so I don’t know. Maybe someone out there does and can let us know.

Q: [by JBaum9000] Mr. Williams: How long did it take to film a single 30 minute episode of the Brady Bunch before it would be ready to broadcast? Were there any episodes that you remember taking an unusually long time to film because of missed lines, cast illnesses, etc?

A: It took four days to film each episode. If there were any unforeseen delays like weather or illness the scripts would be adjusted or the schedule changed to avoid delays.

Q: [by pedro] Barry, I'd first like to say that my brothers, sisters and myself have always been "Brady Bunch" fans(even as adults we still catch the occasional episode-we're able to identify it within a few seconds!). I've always felt there should have been a final sort of "wrap-up" episode of the Brady Bunch. Do you regret that the show did not go into a sixth season?

A: We expected(and we were told) that there would be a sixth season so we didn’t film a "wrap up episode". I enjoyed doing the show each year and was hoping they would send "Greg" off to college and develop different types of story lines. Also I wanted to do more musical episodes. But I got over it.
