The Greg Brady Project

Welcome to the official Barry Williams' blog

My friends call me Barry. From time to time I also hear the name Greg. Yeah, as in Greg Brady. The Brady Bunch represents a fun time in my life. But it’s only part of the story. There’s more to say and that’s what The Greg Brady Project is all about – a place to say it. So, I’ve invited some friends to join me and share their perspectives on the Brady’s, the 70′s and just about everything else. Now, I’m inviting you…

Q: [by Plinko5000] I have a quick question Barry. Do you remember when you were a contestant on "Remote Control" back in the late eighties? What was it like? I don't remember, did you win or lose? I remember seeing Susan Olsen getting the boot in round two, but that's all I remember. Thanks!

A: Sure I remember being on Remote Control. I had a blast and yes I did "go all the way" and won bucks for the Adam Walsh Foundation. One of the things that made it memorable is that I met Chris Kreski there who became my co-writer on Growing Up Brady.

Q: [by matrigilio] Barry, I am a fan in Connecticut and heard you on KC-101 Wednesday morning and enjoyed it. I was wondering since you must meet lots of famous people in the business you're in, do you collect and save autographs of people now, or even from your "Brady Bunch" days? Thanks , Mike

A: I have autographs from people I admire but not a collection. A few that I display in my home are from Ronald Reagan, Martina Navratilova, and Tom Jones and oh yes I do have one with Don Drysdale. Quite a mix, huh?

Q: [by lyelye] Hi Barry. I'm curious to know if you and the other Brady kids got to pick out your own clothes for the show or if a wardrobe person made you wear certain things. Also, did you ever in real life ask out any of the girls who played your girlfriends on the show?

A: We had a wardrobe department that was responsible for our clothes although sometimes we brought in our own. The fringe vest I am wearing when we are at the recording studio was from my closet.(I am not bragging) No I didn’t date any of the "girlfriends" Greg had on the show, I stuck pretty close to my TV "sister".

Q: [by rwaid] Did Christopher Knight and Mike Lookinland(in the Brady Bunch Hour) perm their hair? I know in the book you did not, and Robert denies it, but what about those two. Sure seems strange that at the beginning of the 5th season, Chris has curls.

A: Blame it on the teen age years. Christopher and I suffered the same "hairy" fate of the frizzies. No perms.

Q: [by melissa8_] Hi Barry, I just wanted to tell you how much I loved watching the Brady Bunch when I was a little kid. I also remember watching the "Highway to Heaven" episode titled "A Song For Jason" when Jason(your son on the show) attended cancer camp. How were you approached to play that role. Also, what was it like working with Joshua Miller(another one of my favorite actors)?

A: Michael Landon offered me the role after seeing a performance I did for his Tennis Tournament. Joshua was very professional. I expect great things from him. Thanks for writing neighbor.

Q: [by RokNy] Several years ago I saw a biography about the Brady Bunch which included your doing a recording session singing a mature adult song which I believe was Italian in nature. Your voice was almost operatic. I would love to get a copy of that song and any others you may have recorded like it. Is it available?

A: You may be referring to Brady Bunch Home Movies which Susan Olsen produced. I sang "This Is The Moment" from the musical Jekyll and Hyde. I did not release the recording but thanks for asking.

Q: [by FOX Unauthorized Brady Bunch movie] Did Robert Reed really have that much trouble with Sherwood and what was his reason for not wanting to be in the last episode? Did the Brady's really get along behind the screen or were there fights and stuff? Was that you playing Robert Reed in the Unauthorized Brady Brunch Story that aired on Fox May 16, or were you in any way involved with that show? Saw the show on fox last night what do you think about it ….. was it pretty much true?

A: Growing Up Brady I think is a fair and accurate portrayal of the people involved. Yes Robert had tremendous difficulty with Sherwood. He didn’t think the premise of "Hair Brained Scheme" was believable. We Brady’s did indeed get along and still do. I nor anyone connected with The Brady Bunch, had anything to do with the FOX Unauthorized version(why do you think they called it Unauthorized?). I didn’t like it at all. The facts, which were taken from my book, public domain and movie script, were accurate, but the portrayals were badly done and exploited.

Q: [by sheilakmason] Hi Barry. I was looking at the new movie "Growing Up Brady" pictures, and I was wondering how you went about finding this particular cast? What specific traits did you look for when choosing them? Thanks.

A: Through the casting process at Paramount Studios. The producers, director, head of casting at Paramount and also executives at NBC were all involved. I was looking for people that had similar qualities to our "Bunch" but not look a-like.

Q: [by purpleladydi99] Barry, If I were to spend one day with you, what would I learn about you that's totally different from what I see on TV appearances??? Thanks, Diane.

A: I love riding motorcycles.

Q: [by amyscott81698] Hi Barry, I recently saw you at the Strand Theatre and I was wondering the name of your opening song, I know it had the word moment in it, I was wondering where I can find this and what Broadway play it was from? Thanks your biggest fan, Amy

A: "This Is The Moment" from Jekyll and Hyde.
