‘Rusty is stripped of his campaign manager duties by an angry Greg’
In these turbulent political times, as accusations fly and mud is slung, may we remember the example of those upstanding citizens whose steadfast adherence to ethical campaign principles lit a path along the dim road to a truly democratic republic. In a society where winning so often seems to be everything, a few brave souls have been willing to sacrifice victory for the sake of doing the right thing. As usual, we need look no further than the admirable behavior of Greg Brady.
Faced with a tight campaign and unpromising polling numbers, Greg ponders how he can ensure his election as student body president over sibling rival Marcia. Enterprising campaign manager Rusty, hitherto a loyal and hardworking supporter, suggests planting an unsavory rumor implicating Marcia in movie-house balcony behavior with “that creep, Felix Brown!” Greg fires Rusty on the spot, his lightening-quick moral reflexes not allowing so much as an explanation or apology. “You’ve done it now,” admonishes our hero’s remaining campaign worker, “you’ve blown the election.”
Our nation’s leading candidates are sure to face numerous challenges to their integrity in the coming months. They may be tempted, for the sake of political expediency, to compromise their ideals. Now is the time to give the gift of an unwavering moral compass to your favorite presidential hopeful. Call the campaign headquarters, e-mail the candidate’s website, and offer the question by which all future decisions can be righteously made: What would Greg do?
